Warner Bros. Says ‘Gotham City Sirens’ Is ‘Super Important’ to the Studio

Gotham City Sirens
DC Comics, ‘Gotham City Sirens’ #2

With a flurry of DCEU announcements this past week  —  we’re getting two more Joker movies with two separate Jokers! The Batman isn’t going to be one big crossover affair!  —  the writing seems to be increasingly on the wall for some of the second-tier Warner Bros. projects. Projects like Gotham City Sirens, the antiheroine-driven comic book movie featuring popular characters Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, and Catwoman. Gotham City Sirens was noticeably absent from Comic-Con this year, and while alleged director David Ayer recently took to Twitter to reassure everyone of his involvement, things have been quiet. A little too quiet, maybe.

Quiet enough that Forbes’ Mark Hughes (via Heroic Hollywood) reached out to a contact at Warner to see what, if anything, was going on with Gotham City Sirens. Depending on how you look at it, the response was either incredibly enthusiastic or the most generic non-vote of confidence you can expect to hear from a studio insider. Here’s the quote:

Harley, Catwoman and Poison Ivy are super important to us– And a super cool team, too!

Honestly, when the only thing you hear from a studio about a movie is that it’s definitely not cancelled, that’s not exactly going to fill you to the brim with faith, but Hughes was confident enough with his source to confirm that Gotham City Sirens is still in development for all to read, so we’ll see what comes of this. Given the success of Wonder Woman, it would seem strange of Warner Bros. to punt on another female-driven action movie, especially one with the popular star of Suicide Squad. Whatever happens next, here’s hoping I’m not forced to write a monthly “Gotham City Sirens is still in production!” post for the next couple of years, because there’s only so many ways you can frame no news as an interesting topic.
