The Guardians and the Avengers Aren’t Going to Become Friends Overnight in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

Avengers Guardians of the Galaxy crossover

Thanos finally getting some real screen time in Avengers: Infinity War as the ultimate big bad is pretty exciting, but possibly even more exciting is the fact that we’ll also get to see our two favorite Marvel superhero teams come face-to-face for the first time. Until now, there hasn’t been any connective tissue to bridge the gap between the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy, but a foe like Thanos needs more than one group of heroes to take him down. But while these heroes are incredibly powerful, don’t expect them to buddy up with each other right off the bat.

When Fandango talked to the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, they revealed that the inevitable Guardians and Avengers meetup won’t all be smooth sailing. Zoe Saldana (Gamora) said the Guardians’ cockiness will make it a little difficult for them to make friends.

We were so cocky. Deep down we were like, ‘We’re the Guardians of the Galaxy!’ But it was super exciting — the fact that they’re bringing every character in the Marvel universe together and that this super villain is such a prominent figure amongst the Guardians of the Galaxy gives our level of importance quite a boost.

Dave Bautista, who plays Drax, said that the Guardians perhaps work much better as a unit than the Avengers do.

When we come onto set as the Guardians, we are the Guardians. Anybody stepping onto set with us has to deal with all of us. There are usually one or two Avengers. We are the Guardians, we come as that and carry a scene like that and we do business as usual, which is a lot of chemistry, a lot of interaction amongst ourselves. And the Russos were very encouraging of that. I think we’ve established ourselves and we deserve to be right up there with the Avengers. I think we’re just as strong, if not stronger, as a unit ‘cause we’re a family.

There are a number of key differences between the Avengers and the Guardians, the first, and biggest, being: while the Guardians have spent all this time learning to become a family, the Avengers have just experienced a fundamental moral rift during Civil War that tore their group right down the middle. Both teams are going to have to iron out their differences real fast if they expect to go up against the strongest villain in the galaxy and win.

Both teams are also full of very cocky, volatile members who very much need to prove their skills to their friends and enemies alike, so we’ll no doubt see plenty of posturing by the likes of Peter Quill and Iron Man, and probably most of the rest of them. Maybe the Guardians will try to have a go at Mjolnir too. Is Groot worthy?

Chris Pratt (Peter Quill) revealed that his character is perhaps a little intimidated by the God of Thunder — or, at least, the man who plays him.

We’re the Guardians of the Galaxy — we don’t get intimidated! [Okay] I was a little secretly intimidated. Chris Hemsworth, he’s so tall and handsome — I had to go home and really look myself in the mirror and say, you know, there’s a possibility that you just might be one of those guys who mostly loves your wife but also kind of loves Chris Hemsworth a little bit too.

Same, Chris. Same.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters May 5. Avengers: Infinity War is out May 4, 2018.
