On this day in rock history, Motley Crue and Styx released signature albums.

Pieces of Eight, a triple-platinum smash, represented Styx's last progressive-leaning project – and a tour de force moment for Tommy Shaw, who had a pair of hits in "Renegade" and "Blue Collar Man." Meanwhile, the six times-platinum Dr. Feel Good became Motley Crue's best-selling album.

It was a day of beginnings, as U2 released their debut EP, INXS played their first-ever concert and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame opened its doors. But there was a notable ending too, as the Who released It's Hard then pledged to call it quits. That's not the way it worked out, of course, but the album still marked the last with drummer Kenney Jones.

Jackson Browne would produce a singer-songwriting masterpiece, even as the Grateful Dead reunited with a key member on Blues for Allah.
