Texas A&M Wants the Focus on Football

Texas A&M plays Rice this Saturday in the season opener, and the school released a statement this week saying that’s where the focus is – on football, and not on things happening off the field with quarterback Johnny Manziel.

The Heisman winner is accused of signing pieces of memorabilia for cash, and NCAA rules state only the school – not the player – can profit from autographs.

A&M said in a statement from the athletic director:  “The focus of our coaches and student-athletes is solely on preparing for Rice this Saturday, and in the best interests of Texas A&M and the 100-plus student-athletes on the team, I have instructed Coach Sumlin, his staff and our student-athletes to refrain from commenting on or answering questions regarding the status of our starting quarterback, Johnny Manziel.”

Manziel spent several hours on Sunday meeting with the NCAA about the accusations that he was given a 5-figure flat fee in exchange for signing hundreds of items.

On the field, the Aggies and Rice Owls will kick off the new season Saturday, and fans will just want to see some of the touchdowns, and escapes from the pocket that Manziel has become known for.  Some analysts say Manziel will likely declare for the NFL draft after the season is over.
