Let me start off by saying this: This is not satire. I am actually very, VERY thankful that Winter Storm Fern didn't present too much trouble for most of Deep East Texas. Now, I know that there were some issues, and there are still people that are without power and other amenities.

I'm just thankful that it wasn't too bad for me personally. It got cold. Actually, even as I'm writing this, it's STILL cold. But, I didn't have damage to our house, our vehicles, or anything else.

"So, Mark, What DID You Do During the Winter Storm?"

Do any of y'all remember Hurricane Rita back in 2005?  Well, to borrow a phrase from that time, we just took the chance to "Hunker Down" and ride out the weather. We made sure that we had enough food (perishable and non-perishable items, just in case the power went out), made sure that we had more than enough blankets, and entertainment options (some that required electricity, wi-fi, etc. and some that didn't require any of that).

Then, we parked our vehicles in our garage, locked the doors, and waited it out. The only time that the door opened was to let the dog outside. He'd go out for a grand total of 45 seconds, then he was ready to come back in. He's no dummy, he knew it was too cold out there too!

Luckily, we didn't lose power or internet connection. I even went so far as to stream The Princess Bride because my wife asked for it. (I'm no dummy either. That's probably where the dog gets it!)

Takeaways from Winter Storm Fern in Deep East Texas

I think we did it right. We prepared early, we didn't try to go out exploring on dangerous roads in ridiculously cold weather. But I think the main takeaway is this: BRING ON THE WARM WEATHER. That's it. That's the takeaway. I wasn't built for this kind of weather, and I'll gladly admit it.

Now, onto warmer weather.

Winter Prep for the Warm Weather Texan

Most Texans aren't used to frigid cold weather. That's just a fact. Before the cold hit, be sure to make sure that you've at least considered the simple winter preparation ideas. NOTE: These aren't in any specific order.
