East Texans With Navy Ties Might Love The Movie ‘Greyhound’

We rooted for Tom Hanks to beat the coronavirus earlier this year, and now it's back to the business of being fans of his movies.  Military families in East Texas might especially love this one.

Tom Hanks loves learning about the past, and as he puts it, "reads and pursues history for pleasure."  Since, well, not everyone does that, it's easy to trust him with movies about history.  He vows to get the basics right, and in most of the reviews about Greyhound so far, the critics seem to agree that the ins and outs of the Navy are right on.

My dad is a U.S. Navy veteran, and I feel protective of Pop and his experience.  He went through some intense situations that he'll barely talk about now, and he also made some lifelong friends during his time with the Navy.  He was based in San Diego and spent time in Guam and the Philippines.  It was well after World War II, but this new Navy-centered movie will mean something to him I'm sure.

Greyhound stars Tom Hanks, and it's based on the 1955 novel "The Good Shepherd" by C. S. Forester.  It's about a Navy Commander on his first war-time assignment in WW II.  He's in charge of defending a merchant ship convoy under attack by submarines in early 1942 during the Battle of the Atlantic that came right after the U.S. entered the war.  Rogerebert.com said, "It’s a classic story of someone who would never call himself a hero, but most certainly was one to those he protected on his convoy."

Greyhound was originally supposed to be out on June 12 but was delayed because of the pandemic and then released to Apple TV+ last week.  Hmm.  Apple TV+.  That may be the biggest drawback of the movie, because it's not available on everyone's TV, including mine and Pop's.  Can we come over?
