Get Ready For Free Comic Book Day In May

When I was growing up, I always had comic books around. Not just the monthly edition versions but also books full of them like Calvin & Hobbes, Garfield, Pearls Before Swine, and others. I always looked forward to going to the bookstores in Nacogdoches and Lufkin to stock up on new comics. But there was one day that I looked forward to even more, because I could get more comics, for free. That day was Free Comic Book Day, and it's coming up soon.

Free Comic Book Day is Saturday, May 2nd

According to FreeComicBookDay.com - YES, it's even got its own website - Free Comic Book Day 2026 will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2026 (it's always held on the first Saturday of May). The name kind of gives away the pertinent information for this day that's observed by both kids and adults. Yes, I'm one of those that STILL enjoys comic books, even as an adult. You'll get no judgement from me, whatsoever.

This is your chance to go get free comic books of all different genres. Whether you're looking for funny, dramatic, superheroes, supervillains, or something else, this is your day to go check them out.

Unfortunately, we don't have any Deep East Texas bookstores that I'm aware of with extensive comic book selections in our area that will be participating in Free Comic Book Day this year. And while that is a pretty disappointing thought, I'm thinking that it might be worth it to travel to a different city to take advantage of the day. I know I can't be the only one around here that thinks Free Comic Book Day is still a cool concept.
