That ‘Labyrinth’ Remake Is Not Actually a Remake, Thank Goodness

We can all calm down because the sanctity of Jim Henson’s Labyrinth is not being disturbed as previously thought. Over the weekend, we learned that Sony had struck a deal with Jim Henson Co. for a Labyrinth reboot based on a screenplay by Guardians of the Galaxy co-writer Nicole Perlman. Perlman herself has now taken to social media to allay your fears and ensure you that no one is remaking your beloved Labyrinth and this news was all just a matter of poor timing.

Perlman took to Twitter to clarify the news, stating that she had a deal with Jim Henson Co. back in 2014, so the timing of this report was just highly unfortunate. She also states the obvious: the original film is “perfect as is.”

Like many fans, Labyrinth is Perlman’s favorite childhood film, so if anyone wants to preserve its integrity, it’s her. A Labyrinth sequel has been rumored for a few years now, and it seems that those rumors originated in some grain of truth, as Perlman wrote the screenplay back in 2014. That the news “broke” now, just a couple of weeks after David Bowie’s death, is — as she maintains — unfortunate timing.

Whatever happens with this new Labyrinth sequel / whatever-it-is, we can take some comfort in knowing that no one is trying to screw it up.
