Well, we were going to have to start ceding properties to virtual reality eventually, right? So we might see with 1992 classic The Lawnmower Man, as cinematic VR company Jaunt has obtained the rights to remake the Pierce Brosnan virtual thriller as an original scripted series designed for VR headsets.

According to RoadtoVR (h/t IGN), Jaunt has partnered with with The Lawnmower Man franchise rights holders Jim Howell and Rupert Harvey to develop and produce a a multi-episode re-imagining of the film, to be distributed as an original series for VR headsets. Lawnmower Man is one of five content deals going into production in 2017, including future dystopia Miss Gloria, lunar base exploration Luna, immortality parable The Enlightened Ones, and stoner comedy Bad Trip.

Says Howell of the Lawnmower Man series:

The original movie was a film of unsurpassed imagination and creativity with its ground-breaking use of VR back in 1992. Together with Jaunt we look forward to a contemporary team bringing to life a whole new world of VR; a world of immersive entertainment and communication. We are very excited to be working with Jaunt to create a VR realization of the film.

The film itself starred Pierce Brosnan as a scientist performing VR experimentation on an intellectually-challenged gardener (Jeff Fahey); the franchise eventually spawning Lawnmower Man 2: Beyond Cyberspace, and several video games. It’s too early to take any stock of what the series’ cast might look like, but watch the original trailer below:
