He made guest appearances on many television shows including "Love American Style", "JAG", and "The Virginian", but what most Classic Rockers will likely remember most, is his friendly smile, while hosting the Miss America Pageant from 1982 to 1990.

Gary Collins was also a regular daytime invader of living rooms as he hosted a television talk show in the 80s called "Hour Magazine".

His on screen presence spanned over four decades beginning in '65 with "The Wackiest Ship in the Army".  Collins married Miss America of 1959, Mary Ann Mobley, in 1967.  Sadly the couple separated just last year, and despite being know for having a cheerful disposition, he did get in trouble with the law, being convicted for drunk driving in 2007.

INSP (channel 66 in Lufkin on Suddenlink) has been running some Gary Collins "The Virginian" tribute shows, but you may have to stay awake until Midnight to view them.

The preliminary report cites that Gary Collins died of natural causes on October 13.  He was 74.
