When it comes to sports, I was one of those people that stuck to the more common ones. What I mean by that is that I played basketball and baseball. And, in my defense, we didn't have a lot of other options in the Deep East Texas area.

So, that means that I had no experience with skateboarding and still don't. We didn't have many places to skateboard around when I was growing up. Dirt roads didn't make for good skateboarding paths. That's why skateparks were never on my radar. Someone built a skate area in Lufkin at the Kiwanis Park a few years ago, and it's still there, but that's all I know. Other than the people I see skating out there when I drive by, and the few friends that I had that had skateboards in college, I didn't think that there were many fans in Deep East Texas, until I came across a petition online.

Petition to Create a Skatepark in Nacogdoches

On September 18, 2024, a Michael Williams started an online petition on Change.org titled, "Implement a Dedicated Skatepark in Nacogdoches, Texas". It looks like it didn't get very many signatures, so it didn't really gain ground, but I was still impressed that someone had taken the time to put together the information to try to make something like that happen for our area.

In it, he means that there are over six million people that participate in skateboarding - and that number is probably even bigger now that it's two years later. He also talks about how skateboarding "not only promotes physical activity" but "also encourages creativity and resilience". If you read the petition in full, you can tell that Michael had a passion for it.

However, like I mentioned earlier, it didn't get many signatures and kind of stalled out. My question now is: Is that something that might be worth revisiting? And, if not a petition, is there another way to get that ball - or in this cases, those wheels - rolling in Nacogdoches again?
