Though the street signs will remain the same you can help turn Church Street in Nacogodches into Mango Street. Help celebrate this NEA Big Read Book with live music and interactive art.

If you have never read the book 'The House On Mango Street' then you might be a little lost as to what exactly is going on. It's a best-selling book about a young Chicana girl growing up in the Hispanic part of Chicago.

You don't have to read the book to benefit from all that is going on this Saturday, October 2nd, 2021 from 2 pm - 4 pm. The weather should be perfect for a stroll, and if it does sprinkle there is always a shop nearby to duck into.

Entertainment

There will be live music on the brick streets. Enjoy the authentic sounds of Zaya, while you stroll.

There will be interactive art with SFA's Art Alliance at this free event. You can walk right into the galleries at the Cole Art Center and Falling Star Gallery.

Pick up something to eat at the Blue Horse Bakery, while you are there. You could pick up a sandwich at the Church Street General Store.

“The NEA Big Read exposes people to new genres and ideas and challenges their current tastes in literature. And the best part is that people told us that at our events! They not only read something that they wouldn’t normally have read, but they went out of their way to participate in a community event and learn more about the story, characters, plot and author. It just really shows the community buy-in we have and the hunger communities have for connection with each other.” – the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Library, an NEA Big Read grantee, in a Q&A with Arts Midwest
