SFA Gardens Opens Muscadine Vineyard for Picking on August 28th

Most people in and around Deep East Texas are familiar with the SFA Gardens - They're made up of the Ruby Mize Azalea Garden, the Gayla Mize Azalea Garden, the Mast Arboretum and the Pineywoods Native Plant Center. What lots of people don't realize is that there is also a muscadine vineyard in the gardens, and on certain days you can pick your own muscadines.

Pick Your Own Muscadines on August 28th

According to the Pick your own Muscadines event page on Facebook, on Friday August 28th the SFA Gardens will be opening up their muscadine vineyard to the public. The vineyard is located in the Jimmy Hinds Park at 514 East Austin Street in Nacogdoches. Starting at 8:00 that morning, for $10 per bucket, anyone can come and pick the muscadines. The muscadine picking wraps up at noon that day.

This is something that they do regularly at the SFA Gardens. This vineyard is actually a research plot, where all different kinds of muscadines can be studied. After the studies are done, they open up the gates and let people come pick them. Then, they do it all over again the next year. They've actually had one muscadine picking day this year, on August 14th.

So, whether you're looking to make jelly, wine, or if you're just a fan of eating muscadines just like they are, you might want to make plans to be out at the vineyard on August 29th. $10 isn't too steep of a price for local fruit, right?
