FX ‘Y: The Last Man’ Has Script Inbound, Will Be Full Series
It’s taken forever and a day to get Y: The Last Man adapted to live-action, let along the FX version in development since at least 2015, but there’s hope on the horizon. Not only do we have a showrunner, but FX expects a script arriving within a few months, and confirms a format for the comic-adapted drama.
Speaking from the FX TCA press tour, network boss John Landgraf said of the Michael Green-helmed series’ progress “We’re supposed to get a script in the next couple months.” Additionally we can expect that any potential adaptation will indeed seek to adapt the full scope of Brian K. Vaughan’s work as an ongoing series, rather than any set limited event.
For those unaware of the 60-issue series written by Vaughan and drawn by Pia Guerra in 2002, Y: The Last Man follows the aftermath of an apocalyptic event in which almost every male on Earth simultaneously dies out, save for twenty-something amateur escape artist Yorick, and his pet monkey Ampersand. The pair team with secret agent “355" and a young doctor to travel the country in search of Yorick’s girlfriend Beth, and an answer to the worldwide plague.
FX previously partnered with Vaughan, Color Force’s Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson (The Hunger Games, American Crime Story) to develop the sci-fi comic as an ongoing series. New Line had previously acquired the rights in in 2007, setting David Goyer, Carl Ellsworth and director D.J. Caruso to adapt Y: The Last Man as a single film, before rights reverted to Vaughan in 2014.
There’s a good chance of Y: The Last Man finally making it to series, but should we expect any major changes to the canon, especially as an ongoing series? Stay tuned for the latest.
