In what can only be described as an everlasting tribute to a beloved coach, educator, friend, and mentor, the Lufkin school board voted unanimously to rename the Lufkin High School football field "John Outlaw Memorial Field" at Abe Martin Stadium.

For 17 seasons, Outlaw was "Panther" football, and as Head Coach and Athletic Director, his career record of 302 wins, 89 losses and 3 ties put him at the top of being one of the most successful high school football coaches in the country.  But those who knew him best, say his greatest achievement was not measured in wins and losses, but rather as a person who cared about the kids - first.

"Coach" left us on December 23, 2011 after suffering an apparent heart attack upon completing his morning jogging ritual.  He was only 58 years old.
