Radical Announcement: Walmart Will Not Be Open On Thanksgiving

Walmart is one of the stores that you just expect to be open 365 days a year. They do it every year. However, that won't be the case THIS YEAR.

In a statement from CEO John Furner, Walmart made the announcement that their stores will be closed on November 26th - Thanksgiving Day - this year. Furner said, “We know this has been a trying year, and our associates have stepped up. We hope they will enjoy a special Thanksgiving Day at home with their loved ones.” And, in addition to the Walmart stores being closed, the Sam's Club locations will be closed on Thanksgiving as well.

But the Thanksgiving closure wasn't the only big news that Walmart announced today. They also announced that their employees will be receiving bonuses. Walmart associates will be receiving a cash bonus "...for their ongoing contributions and dedication to serving customers, members and communities during this unprecedented time." Full-time hourly associates will be receiving a $300 bonus, and part-time and seasonal workers will be receiving a $150 bonus. Altogether, this comes out to about $428 million dollars.

I don't know if you've been to any of our local Walmart locations lately, but the employees have really stepped up during this time. Stocking shelves, sanitizing carts and other things around the store, getting online and curbside pick-up orders ready for customers, and more. When I went in, it wasn't the Walmart experience I was expecting, but I definitely appreciated all that they were doing.
