In Texas - at least in most of the state - we don't have to worry about huge winter storms hitting regularly. Every now and then we get some ice accumulation, or a bit of snow that causes trouble on our commutes.

We're Not Wimps...We Just Don't Do Extreme Cold

I can hear people now, "Oh, you Texans are just wimps when it comes to weather!" Or, "We're used to single digit temperatures here in [insert northern city here]". And the truth is, we're not wimps. I'm from Deep East Texas, and I'm here to tell you that we just don't deal with cold weather often enough to get used to it. Also, to the people that are used to the frigid low temperatures, come talk to me in July when we hit TRIPLE-digit temps...on a daily basis!

We live in Texas. The vast majority of the state doesn't see temperatures drop down into the 20s very often, and we see ice and snow even less than that. And we're okay with that. It's one of the things that makes us proud to be Texans!

The Important Things to Check Before the Weather Gets Bad

Even though we're not used to frigid weather, we have learned a few things to make our houses prepared for those rare occasions that we do get a taste of tougher winter weather. You've probably heard someone referring to the "Four Ps", which are the four things that need to be checked anytime the weather gets into those sub-freezing ranges. They are People, Pets, Pipes and Plants" (I don't know if that's the right order, but that's what they stand for.).

So, if the weather is going to get bad, those "4 Ps" need to be checked before it really hits. Make sure that your family and friends have a warm place to ride out the weather. Make sure your pets have a warm place to stay - if possible, bring them inside. Make sure your pipes are covered, or at least weather proofed (There's not much worse than busted pipes in the middle of the freezing cold...). Finally, make sure that plants are covered and, if possible, moved inside as well.

These are just a few reminders. Keep on reading below for a few quick ways you can prep your home for colder weather. Think of this as a "Winter Prep for the Warm Weather Texan". Stay warm, friends!

Winter Prep for the Warm Weather Texan

Most Texans aren't used to frigid cold weather. That's just a fact. Before the cold hit, be sure to make sure that you've at least considered the simple winter preparation ideas. NOTE: These aren't in any specific order.
