East Texans Honor Veterans This Memorial Day

Memorial Day is usually a day to relax at the lake, fire up the grill, or take in a baseball game.

But it's more than a day off. While we're enjoying the festivities, it's important to remember why we're not at work. To take time to honor military veterans!

A group gathered in Lufkin Saturday at the Garden of Memories cemetery to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, and if you were there you probably saw the multitude of flags.

The stats can be pretty alarming. The unemployment rate in the US is 7.9 percent, but among Veterans that number can be as high as 19 percent!

It’s not easy for military members to wrap up a tour of duty and then find work right away. The transition to civilian life can be tough.

There’s a job fair today that has the goal of connecting Veterans with employers, and placing them in the right work environment. It's at the Pitser Garrison Civic Center.

Vietnam Memorial Makes Rare Stop in East Texas

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial that graces Washington DC is large, and a replica half that size travels the country to give those wishing to pay respects close to home the chance to do that.

The wall comes to East Texas this weekend after a stop in Kansas last week. It moves on to Alabama next week. We'll have to make a short drive to see it this weekend, but it may be worth it since it will be the only Texas stop this fall.
