Texas Ranks Near The Top In New Natural Disasters Study

Texas has come out near the top of a list that we don't want to be on. According to a new study from WalletHub, Texas ranks as the third most impacted by natural disasters.

Mississippi and Louisiana take the top spots on the list that look all the way back to 1980 at natural disasters that caused at least $1 billion in damages.

The study also looks at the damage cost per capita. Texas's total score was 87.88 and though many states had more disasters that qualify, the number of people impacted and the amount lost played heavily into our spot on the list.

Billion Dollar Disasters Keep Racking Up In Texas 

Texas has it all when it comes to natural disasters. Such a big state with so many diverse ecosystems makes mayhem in many different ways:

• Wildfires
• Drought
• Flood
• Freezes
• Severe Storms
• Tropical Cyclones

Adding all of these different events since 1980 and you get a picture of just how hard life can be at times in the Lone Star State. Tropical Cyclones or hurricanes make up about a third of the estimated cost of disasters in Texas.

Deaths in Texas are more likely to be caused by drought and heatwaves. Our recent winter storms also attributed to us being higher on the list.

Though it wasn't one of the biggest financial disasters, we all seem to be paying for the event that officially caused 246 deaths in 2021 in progressively higher electricity bills.

2023 Has Been A Big Year For Natural Disasters In The U.S.

There have already been 16 natural disasters in the U.S. that have caused over a billion dollars in damage in 2023.
