Growing up in this area, I knew all about the Big Bass Splash tournaments on Lake Sam Rayburn and Lake Toledo Bend. They were always huge deals for Deep East Texas. We'd hear everything about the fish that were brought in and the prizes that were won.

But there's just something about being there in person when one of those massive fish gets weighed in. There's something even more exciting when one of those fish breaks the all-time tournament record. This weekend, I got to experience the biggest bass to ever be weighed in at the Big Bass Splash on Lake Sam Rayburn, and it was awesome.

Massive 12.81 Pound Bass Weighs in at Big Bass Splash

The Big Bass Splash on Lake Sam Rayburn is the original Big Bass Splash tournament hosted by Sealy Outdoors. Before there were BBS tournaments on Toledo Bend, Lake Fork, or Lake Guntersville, there was only the one on Sam Rayburn. This year's tournament - held on April 17th through the 19th - was the 42nd year that's been hosted on Sam Rayburn.

This year, there was a bass caught that was bigger than any other bass that had been caught in any of the previous 41 years. The fish weighed in at 12.81 lbs. Glen Stone, an angler out of Marshall, reeled him in on the third and final day of the tournament, and my wife and I were able to be there and get the video of the weigh-in. Check it out:

Being there in-person was quite the experience. You see, I'd be ecstatic to catch a fish that weighed in a half that sized. To be honest, a quarter of that size would make me happy.

This was the fish that won the tournament overall. I'm curious to see how long it takes for someone to catch one that breaks this record, if they ever do.

A Look at the Lake Sam Rayburn Low Levels - January 2026

A year of low rainfall amounts, plus maintenance on the dam, has taken its toll on Lake Sam Rayburn. I was able to snap a few pictures from the road, plus Ewing Park, one of the previous boat launch sites.
