Based on the numbers from the U.S. Census Bureau in 2020, the population of Nacogdoches was just over 32,000. It was 32,147 to be exact. That's not a huge number. I mean, for me, that's a bigger city. But that's just because I grew up in a very small town. We're talking a population of less than 1,000.

But I get it. If you're comparing Nacogdoches to a city the size of Houston, it's pretty small. Now, you might be sitting there going, "Where are you going with this Mark?" No worries, I'm getting there. Naturally, in a city the size of Nacogdoches, you would expect to have duplicates of some things. Multiple restaurants serving the same kind of cuisine, several hair salons/barbershops, multiple car dealerships...I'm saying that you wouldn't expect to just see one of each thing. You would expect a bit of diversity, right?

Well, Nacogdoches follows that rule of thumb...on MOST things. However, there are a few times that it goes a bit overboard with duplicates. One of those, is grocery stores.

Nacogdoches Has Seven Grocery Stores

If you pull up Google Maps, or better yet, if you drive through Nacogdoches, you will find that there are seven - Yes, SEVEN - grocery stores. And they're not all unique brands. So, not only are there duplicate grocery stores, but the duplicates have duplicates from the same parent companies! Am I making sense?

There are two Walmarts (one Supercenter, one Neighborhood Market), two Krogers (not different names, just a big one and a smaller one), two Brookshire Brothers (not really different sizes, just different locations), and most recently a brand-new Aldi.

This isn't even taking into account the number of dollar stores of different kinds. These are just traditional grocery stores.

How Many is Too Many?

So here's the question: When do you reach the point of too many grocery stores? Or really, too many of the same kind of store, of ANY sort?

I don't know about you guys, but seven seems a bit excessive in my mind. Now, if this were Houston, or Dallas, or San Antonio, it might make a bit more sense to me. But I'm still thinking seven is a bit much...

And don't get me started on the number of donut shops...
