UT Has Its New Leader
They have to wait a few more days before it becomes official, but it looks like the University of Texas system that includes 14 schools has picked its new Chancellor. And he's a New Yorker.
Chancellor William McRaven stepped down in May, and they've been sorting through resumes and doing interviews for most of the summer to find his replacement.
At a meeting in Austin last weekend, regents picked the former chancellor of the City University of New York as the sole finalist to be the next chancellor for the UT system. He'd be in charge of dealing with the legislature and fundraising for 14 campuses across Texas, covering 100,000 employees and 235,000 students.
James B. Milliken is the sole finalist, but they have to wait 21 days before they can formally appoint him. Milliken is also a former president of the University of Nebraska.
UT-Austin gets the most attention because it's the biggest school in the University of Texas System, and there are other campuses closer to home. In addition to UT-Tyler, the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston; the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston; and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley bring thousands of students to the system too. And there's the University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler doing all of that important research and training future health care providers as well. The UT system has a big impact outside of Austin for sure.
Classes start in a couple of weeks! Make it a great year.
