Yes, West Nile is a huge concern across Texas and 47 other US states right now.

But it's not necessary to call 911 when you notice a mosquito bite. Are people really doing that?

Texans - especially those in North Texas around the Dallas area - have been calling for help when they notice one of those red bumps left by a mosquito. As you might guess, 911 operators have had their hands full, and they say in the absence of true West Nile symptoms there's no reason to panic when you find an itchy mosquito bite. Ambulances are needed for heart attacks and car accidents, not little red mosquito bumps.

West Nile paranoia is turning into its own disease. Two of my three daughters have fevers right now, and even though they have no other West Nile symptoms I'm thinking, what if?

Just in case you want to do a symptom check, West Nile symptoms include fever, headache, tiredness, and body aches, occasionally a skin rash (on the trunk of the body) and swollen lymph glands.

Wear the bug spray and dry up the standing pools of water around the house. But don't call 911 for a bug bite!
